Brother Cherrington gave a remarkable talk. He was impressed to talk about the follow through to our decisions.
"Our goals are the same, but our paths are different... through the atonement we can be sanctified from sin."
He referenced 1 Nephi 8:20-25 talking about Lehi's vision of the tree of life. He explaining that there were 2 groups in the story, the first group wanted to go to the tree but got lost on their way to the tree of life. The second group found the path and partook of the fruit, but then were ashamed. "They lacked follow through" he said.
Following through is important in all aspects of life, if we didn't have to follow through life would be very different, things could be ignored, but the consequences would eventually mount up. "We need to follow through on our decisions."He gave us 4 simple principles that we can do to improve our follow through to our decisions.
- Gain Control of our time. "we need to control it, not it control us."
- Control our thoughts "When the lord repeats himself, its because it is important."
- Respond to impressions "The more often a person feels without acting, the less he will be ever able to act, and in the long run the less he will be ever able to feel."
- Become what we want to be "Consistently be what we want to become each day"
Gain control of your time. We don't know how much time we have and that is why we must guard the time that we do have, he said not to mistake what he was saying as not to have fun in our lives he just wants us to control our time and not have it control us.
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy; all play and no work makes Jack a mere toy"- Irish proverb Brother Cherrington said we shouldn't do things to just pass the time. Remember your goals and work to reach them.
Do we make time for thoughts or are they just a result of our thinking? There can be others sources for our thoughts, negative thoughts come from a source of the advisory, and positive thoughts could be from the source of heaven.
Become what we want to be. "Be what the lord wants us to be." We each have a vision of ourselves that is our ideal selves, it is the "natural man" that gets in the way of that vision. It is easy to procrastinate what we want to become. Set goals both long and short term.
D&C 42:61 "Revaluation upon Revaluation, Knowledge upon Knowledge"
Boyd k Packer "The world grows increasingly noise, clothing and grooming and conduct are looser and sloppier. Irreverence suits the purposes of the advisory, by obstructing the delicate channels of revelation in both mind and in spirit"
If we minimize the noise, improving our dress, and conduct, we will be able to do a better job of following through with our commitments and know gods will for us. We need to take time to interact with each other. We can learn so much from each other. We should take the time to recreate with your peers.
Listen to your feelings. "Active habits are strengthened by repetition but passive ones are weakened" The more often a person feels without acting, the less he will be ever able to act, and in th long run the less he will be ever able to feel.
if we respond to the impressions of the spirit the lord will trust us with more impressions. The lord will be as involved in our lives as let him be. We are the lords hands and often the answer to other peoples prayers.
Our feelings are given us to excite to action, and when they end in themselves they are cherished to no good purpose.
"The road to our ideal self is not a short trip, Its a life long journey."
We must learn to overcome the natural man. Decide who you want to be, and then sail off in that direction, taking the time to make mid course corrections if necessary.
Mosiah 3:19
Im so grateful to have been able to attend this devotional! One thing that really impacted me was his statement that if we do not control our time, our time will control us... I've been seeing a lot of this in my life lately, as I struggle to balance work, school and a social life.
ReplyDeleteDont get me wrong, I love having a ping pong table in my living room and theres nothing wrong with having a good time with friends! But sometimes, in an attempt to play now/work later, it turns into play now/stay up till 3 am doing homework and feel terrible the next day.
If we "control our time", doing the most important things first, we find there is still plenty of time for friends and recreation!
I'm confident that as I put into practice Bro. Cherrington's counsel I will be able to follow through with what the Lord expects of me!
I'm not one of those people who writes alot of notes. 1 because i don't really go back and read them and 2 because I was told once "why write a whole bunch of notes down that you'll never really go back and read anyway?" So i try and just write what the spirit inspires me. But a couple things i like from the Devo... Is we can't and shouldn't judge. We can't cast that first stone. and also When the Lord repeats himself it's because it's IMPORTANT.
ReplyDeleteI like what trevor was talking about with balancing his time...i try to do homework everynight and stay on top of the homework assigned that same day then the weekend comes and i am FREE to do whatever cause i used my time wisely during the week...(most days)
I loved this devotional, i have been struggling with this exact thing, and this talk made me realize that if i dont start following through, it will be a bad habbit the rest of my life. Not only that the goals and asperations i have to help build the kindom of god, will not be realized. This school experiance is a whole new world of descovering myself, and as i found myself wondering why i came here and haveing feelings of "its just too hard" this talk came at a perfect moment. I love what trever and allison said, because all too often i find myself awake doing home work at 3am, because i got distracted earlier in the day. And That we cant judge people. I reacently had some experiances with my room mate, and this concept. I am from a place where there are extream walks of life on every street corner, and coming here and hearing someone say on man i dont want to talk to that person because they look diffrent is hard for me to understand. I love what the brother giving the talk on judgment said, we must not judge, that is the duty of god and christ, but we can make rightous judgments when nessessery. We must reach out to those who seem to be lost in this worlds many distractions and addictions, and take the time to be friends with even the little extream and "weird" in the sense that they are not like you, and might be lacking in faith and understanding of the gospel.
ReplyDeleteSo I really enjoyed this devotional for the simple fact that it was entertaining. I loved how he started off talking about golf, and because he doesn't have a good swing the ball doesn't go where he wants it do. He doesn't follow through. Likewise, if we don't follow through in our own lives we wont get to where we want to be. I enjoyed the advice to take control of our time and not let time control us. It reminds me of what Elder Bednar often talks about, being agents to act and not to be acted up. Enduring to the end is something that is hard, but we do it one choice at a time, every second of every day.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Brother Cherrington’s devotional and hope he will have to opportunity to speak to us again. Personally, I have a problem with following through until the end in many areas of my life especially my homework. I tend to leave my homework until the last minute or I start it but I don’t ever finish it! In his talk he gave us four basic principles (listed above) to apply to our daily lives and promised us that if we do our follow-through will improve as well as our success. I made a goal this week to adapt these principles into my daily life to help me improve my follow through. So, I typed them up in Outlook as a daily task and set it up to remind me to review them a few times a day so that I wouldn’t forget. Each time it the reminder went off I took a few minutes to read them, think about them and try to apply them to what I was doing. So far I have noticed a few differences just from trying to live these four principles. I am calmer, I don’t feel so overwhelmed and it’s easier for me to stay on task. I know that if I/we try to live these principles we will be blessed with the ability to “Follow-Through To The End” in all areas of our lives!
ReplyDeletewow I really enjoyed this. I like how he talked about not letting time control us. I seem to get distracted easily and hate that I find myself waisting time in this that get me no where. I really liked his advice about controlling our thoughts. I think that this talk really helped me see how I can work better at doing my best. I also liked how he talked about judging people. Its important to love our neighbors.
